5 Ways to Trick Yourself into Working Out More
Working out can be one of the biggest chores that we have to face. When you’re a kid you run around and play with your friends without it ever seeming like something you had to do. Now we think of that play time as work and it ends up putting us off. But there are actually ways that you can trick yourself into working out more without feeling the adult burden of moving your body in a way that benefits you overall. You may end up doing the traditional gym workout without feeling like it’s a chore or you may end up finding a way that makes you not even realize that you’re working out. Either way, you’ve got to try these five ways to trick yourself.
It’s Just a Few MinutesWhen you’re fighting yourself on going to the gym make a deal. You’ll got for seven minutes. That’s it, that’s all, no more, and no guilt. You can totally leave after that. Don’t like counting time? Fine, you can go and run or walk one mile, then you’re done. Most of us don’t run a six minute mile, which is important. At six minutes you’ll start to feel the hormones that make working out not horrible kick in. You’ll start to feel good about yourself and want to keep going. Hence, you’re a tricky, tricky devil.
So you and your posse can’t just get pumped for the gym. You’re dragging your feet and sitting in the car, debating whether you should even go. Get your workout mix loaded and blast it through the speakers. Having that as a pre-workout soundtrack with do two things. First, it will most likely be the energetic music that you save for working out so you’re naturally going to start getting pumped. Second, your body is in the habit of hearing that when you’re working out, so it will naturally start to fall into the pattern of getting ready. It’s like the sleep therapy technique that does the same thing: put on some classical at the same time every night before bed. Your brain and body will do the rest.
Park Far Away
Alright, so you’re just not stoked on the gym. That’s fine. You can trick yourself in other ways. When you go to any store with a large parking lot, no matter the weather or what you’re buying, park as far away from the entrance as you can. You’ll obviously have to walk further there and back, but besides that you’re going to be carrying something one way. That’s a cardio and muscular workout wrapped into one and it just feels frustrating, not like an hour of exercise that you can’t get over. The more you do this, the more it adds up.
Put On Some Music
When you’re doing household chores like cooking or cleaning, put on some seriously danceable music. Then just let go. It doesn’t matter if there are other people doing their thing in the house. You can sing into your wooden spoon or practice twerking (which is great for your back muscles, guy or girl, by the way). If you’re embarrassing yourself that’s even better. Have fun and get really into it, because then you won’t notice your muscles getting a group workout.
